About Jaskevich Sculptor

Jane Jaskevich is a sculptor of stone and wood. She sometimes adds a found object. Her art is her therapy as well as her creative release. When she is immersed in working, the piece seems to take on a direction all its own. It is both peaceful and exciting. She works in her studio in her lush garden surrounded by her 3 dogs and two cats! When she is not sculpting, she teaches sculpture/art in her studio and at the local community college.

Artist Statement

A reviewer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution once said, “Jaskevich is a carver of dreams in alabaster”. Jane’s mythical figures borrow elements from ancient cultures. She transforms big and bulky stones into curvy, smooth and ethereal figures. Some of her larger pieces are created by combining multiple stones. Her work can be seen at www.atlantasculpture.com

A large body of her work portrays women. Her stone sculptures are mystical in nature. Her art reflects the coexistence of the conscious and subconscious, the symbolic and literal, and the ancient and modern.

Jane creates figures by combining various materials such as different stones, wood and found objects. She pays homage to the stones’ Greco-Roman roots. She “borrows” ancient themes and makes them contemporary. The winged figure is a favorite motif. She created a Nike figure from stone and found objects. Nike is ancient in that she is part ruin: having no head, arms or legs. She is modern in her wings are created from the curved back of an antique chair. Jaskevich has always been interested in the spiritual and mystical side of mankind.

Her inspiration to become a sculptor happened when her art professor told the class to create a vessel and give a lecture about it. Jane, taking a clay class at the time, made a pinch pot that resembled a female. The figure was hollow. When it came time for her to talk about her “vessel” Jane said, “This is a vessel that holds the spirit.” Hundreds of sculptures have followed that vessel.

Her public collections include a garden sculpture in a Michigan church and three sculptures for NationsBank Headquarters in Tampa. Jane has two stone sculptures in the permanent collection of the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida. One marble piece graces its sculpture garden. Her large-scale bronze sculptures are the focal point for the GTE Data Services building in Tampa.
