is a Brooklyn-Based Mixed Media Painter who currently resides in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. Duel raised in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the artist grew up with a sincere appreciation and beauty for nature and the natural world and its relationship to man-made structures. After teaching for 2 years in Pennsylvania, James moved to New York City and currently teaches high school Visual Arts at Humanities and the Arts High School in Queens. His recent work is a study of the relationship of nature and the natural world co-existing with man-made structures. Urban Graffiti Cityscapes draws its inspiration from the city and its three artistic elements, including the diverse artistic styles of the architecture and man-made structures that compose the city, the natural environment of nature within–whether its random from or purposely planned landscaping–and the hand drawn graffiti images that cover the buildings. The architecture ranges in variety of diverse designs and styles and while graffiti can be an ugly eyesore in some cases, in certain contexts it becomes a work of art in itself, as well as lending character and personality to the neighborhoods and areas its exhibited in. Through his work James attempts to study the relationship of these three elements and their visual effects on the space around them. In addition to teaching and painting, James also writes. He has written several short stories and recently finished a novel that is the process of being published.

Black Walnut sculpture. “Thematically, my work often reflects relationships- between people, forms in three dimensional space or both. I use sculpture as a vehicle of self-expression of my aesthetic sensibilities. The choice of wood as my preferred medium relates to its living and organic nature, the diverse challenges of its many textures and grains and its inherent warmth and sensuality which readily invite touch. I approach each piece with both tough- and tender-mindedness.”

My art is a response of my soul to the reality. I create an emotional space through visual abstract images. I’m curious in everything where I see energy of life. I see boundless and unforgettable opportunities of conveying real space for imagination and creating a new one. I try to develop an emotional and visual horizons of perception through my artworks as much as I constantly search for images that appeal to participation and emotional experience. This is an improvisation of reflections, feelings as well as definite and indefinite actions during the process of creation. Each of the improvisations merges into a specific form of art at the specific period of time.

After living and traveling in contrasting cultures and countries, I weave my love of nature with what I have learned abroad. I think that this is what gives my work its vibrancy and uniqueness. Tropics and temperate zones each contribute their wealth of subjects and styles. My work draws from life experience and a love of color. Each piece is made entirely of hand-cut pieces of stained glass – often thousands per mosaic. Working on a dense foam core and fiberglass base makes my mosaics strong, weatherproof and lightweight for shipping.

For this shoot I was flying over Nantucket completing an aerial photo assignment when the crowd seeing the ferry off, from Brant Point Lighthouse, caught my eye. It was late afternoon so the long shadows from the lighthouse and the crowd make for an interesting composition and depth which is usually lost in aerial photos.
