This drop leaf chess board table is build from walnut with a hard maple inlay surrounding the chess board surface. It accents the beautiful nature of walnut and the amount of variance in the untreated wood. Most walnut used in furniture manufacturing is kiln dried and steamed which evens the color through the wood. This piece features both. The chess board surface is a purchased item made with steamed walnut and maple veneer while the surrounding table and legs are custom built from surface dried walnut. The table is material all comes from a single piece of wood, showing how much the wood varies in color. It has two drop leaves to provide additional surface when a game is played. This table would also make a great breakfast table The finish is conversion varnish and lacquer.
