Happy Buddha

The figure in the painting is from a 4-foot high wood carving of Nanhai Guanyin of the South Sea, Buddhist culture, Ming Dynasty (16th-17th C). I photographed this statue at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego. The patterned background is based on a fabric design and then there are additional elements, a waterfall, a tropical plant, some boats and butterflies.
