Artist Statement

Artist Statement:
Gary Word

I grew up a prolific artist, transcending in the creative spirit and over the years achieving many artistic accomplishments. Striking the brush to canvas at a very early age, I studied painting styles & techniques of European masters. Inspired by growing up in the country, I painted landscapes and still life themes. Designing and painting in airbrush, I later created commercial art.

After college and following a growing desire for creative adventure, I sought life in a new urban environment: I was ready for the big city life. I was ready for change, and change influenced my direction as an artist. As I was always good with my hands, sculpture was the next natural artistic phase. I chose concrete mortar and clay as material and my subject would be the human form.

Through the years I continued working in clay, refining my style & techniques. My accomplishments resulted as my first successful solo show at Rovser Gallery in Kirkland, Washington, USA. In the late 90's an exciting change was looming: my interest turned to glass, as I was fascinated with the malleable, luminous material. In 2000, I started researching the possibilities, and through that began training in the craft of fused-glass art. Since those early experiences, I have taught myself the glass art business, learning how to pursue art as a business and perfecting my skills as an artist.

Today I continue to master the craft of creating unique designs of fused-glass sculpture. I love how versatile is: it is holy unique within the universe and a fundamentally special medium! Now I produce custom glass pieces large and small for residential & commercial interiors. Extending my eye for form, color and texture into my old love for painting, I recently introduced a new series, "Marine Life ",
seascapes of northwest water habitat.

In a completely different vein, and following a long-standing interest in cinematography, I produced a documentary film about the life and the experiences of hot glass artists in the hot glass community. My passion to see what I could accomplish in film making was realized early in 2010 when the finished project, "A Day in The Life of the Artist " was released.

creative philosophy

an accomplished artist transforming my vision into artistic creation,
all things and man as well, should be like nature,
without measure.
as long as we live we are students and teachers all
we live to express ourselves in form, function and reality;
we all have the creative spirit;
you can find it within yourself;
pursue it and create happiness
