My art was born when a disability from Scheuermanns disease, a disease of the spine, forced me to end my architectural career. Beginning in 2005, with steel in my spine and a steel resolve in my heart I set forth on an artistic odyssey of reinvention.
I work in the digital medium because my disability makes it too difficult to paint the pictures I want to create. Digital technologies allow me to get out in the world, the artistic visions in my mind that help me get myself out of the confines of the constant insidious pain that I cope with every day. This makes my work, I suppose, a testament to the human condition in an intimately personal way.
I desire to use the digital medium to journey to places in my art and to do this, I have become an explorer. Every explorer needs a vessel to travel on. Instead of a vehicle that moves physically through space, my vehicle is software (Photoshop) that moves me through my mind. Each picture I make using photoshop has become a destination on my journeys of discovery. In addition to historical and cultural influences, the Bauhaus, futurism and other movements of early 20th century art, craft and architecture have been important informers of my architecture and they continue to inform my work as an artist.
The most elemental of forms, the circle provides me with the ideal vehicle to synthesize my influences and interests with my yearning to say something about the human spirit. Early humans looked into the sky and observed the heavenly circular objects, most intimately, the moon and the sun. This struck a chord and humans would study the circle and unleash its power in the arts and sciences from our early past to the present. As the circle has bewitched me, I feel connected to this continuum.
In my prints there are other forces at work; Invisible forces. Like the unbridled energy embodied in children playing, the geometric arrangement of the works implies dynamism of movement and kinetic energy; like a spring in tension waiting to be unleashed to propel something forward. Some of the works suggest spinning constructs which allow me to experience an escape into wellbeing, much like the Sufi Whirling Dervishes whose spinning dances bring them closer to spiritual bliss.
I like to think of my prints as 2 dimensional abstracted machines with a series of interconnected moving parts. Although the parts may be seemingly at odds which each other, when put together as a compositional whole, all the parts make sense. This is a metaphor for wellness. Disease or Dis-Ease is when working parts are askew, not at ease, and not working together to form a unity. I seek to make sense out of the chaos; to bring in Ease.
These dynamisms I strive to communicate become a stand-in for my inability to have a dynamic body able to move through the world without constriction by moving me kinetically through my art.
Through my prints comes freedom.
It is this freedom through art that I most want to impart to the viewer.
