A Jump Too FarA Jump Too Far

Product description:This piece describes my sense of the first, and only, jump of my short riding career. Riding through a woods behind two experienced riders, my horse automatically followed as their horses jumped a tree trunk that had fallen across our path. I was not ready and my body leaned back as my horse rose, only to snap forward as he cleared the jump. It felt as if time stopped for an instant, during which time it was uncertain what would happen, then picked up an instant later as we landed on the far side. It was like Zeno’s paradox of the arrow: What is it, he asked, that convinces us that the arrow moves continuously through the air? Could it not be that the arrow is still at each instant, but is recreated an instant later a bit further on, so its movement seems continuous. At any rate, that feeling convinced me to deny myself the pleasures of jumping.
