Arches shows a row of concentric arched buttresses viewed through an open window.
The viewer’s eye is drawn from the deeply shadowed room and immediately out and on through a row of brick arches supporting a building in the court yard beyond. This is one room in a long row built into the exterior wall of the compound at Mission San Jose, an 18th century Spanish mission in San Antonio Texas.
Arches is one image in a larger body of work: an on-going project titled Portals and Pathways, treats the passage of light through and around windows and doors. This is one attempt to capture and share my vision of the subtle drama as light moves across a surface or into a space.
Portals lead us into and out of spaces. Each window sill and threshold defines a transition; inside or outside, a departure or an entry, a beginning or an end. A closed door brings me to wonder what is behind. An open one suggests that I enter. A window invites me to look beyond and out—or in.
Arches was created on Kodak Tri-X sheet film in a Zone VI 4x5 inch view camera mounted with a 150mm Fujinon lens. The negative has been digitally scanned and is presented here as an archival ink jet print. This is not a limited edition print.
