Portals lead us into and out of spaces. Each window sill and threshold defines a transition; inside or outside, a departure or an entry, a beginning or an end. A closed door brings me to wonder what is behind. An open one suggests that I pass through. A window invites me to look beyond and out . . .or in.
Doorways is one image in a larger body of work. An on-going project titled Portals and Pathways treats the passage of light through and around windows and doors. This is one attempt to capture and share my vision of the subtle drama as light moves across a surface or into a space.
In 2014 this image was selected for inclusion in The Four By Five exhibition sponsored by the Photographers Alliance of New Orleans, and appeared on the cover of the September 2014 issue of View Camera magazine.
Doorways was created with Kodak Tri-X sheet film in a Zone VI 4x5 inch camera mounted with a 150mm Fujinon lens. The negative has been digitally scanned and is presented here as an archival ink jet print.
