Product description: Seed-beaded sculpture, 2009. Glass seed beads and findings, hand-built armatures, and recycled steel flower pot wheel. The freaks are the misogynist, the homophobe, the trophy wife, the animal hater, the religious fundamentalist, the bigot, and the sports fanatic, all specialty-typed on the back of each chair. Inspired by the discarded flower pot wheel that comprises my Ferris wheel, I decided to people it with my own personal 21st century "freaks", instead of the traditional bearded ladies and Siamese twins of earlier circus freak shows. This piece took over 8 months of steady work to complete: each figure's armature includes a hand-molded polymer clay head, and a body built with wire limbs wrapped with cloth strips until a suitable shape is reached. These armatures are then encrusted with glass seed beads worked in time-consuming tubular peyote stitch, one or two beads at time, totaling about 180 beads per square inch. One of the marvelous qualities of sculptural beadwork -- beyond its fine detail and luminescence -- is that it can be displayed in direct sunlight without fear of fading colors, since the colors are baked into the beads during production.
