Product description:Using an updated, less toxic version of traditional lacquer technique, I begin with a sheet of quarter inch birch plywood and seal it with gesso. An undercoat of black or lacquer red is gilded with leaf of semi-precious metal, such as composition gold (a brass-like alloy), copper or aluminum. Images are built with numerous layers of waterbased resin interspersed with more leaf, powdered bronze, mica, graphite and pigment. In some cases, mother-of-pearl or other materials may be added. A topcoat of spar varnish is applied for depth of sheen. Frames are finished using the same process, individually designed for the specific artwork.
