Artwork Description: I imagine the world as formed by oppositions. Gravity opposes centrifugal force to determine the orbits of the planets. In Petite Vallée this impression is realized as a central mass of stainless steel surrounded by a floating 'atmosphere' of brightly painted metal. Around the outside shimmers a satellite tracery of welded stainless steel wire. The balance of expansive and constricting forces between the concentric layers shape the piece. The name is an homage to a series of Joan Mitchell paintings in which exuberant 'nature' colors are restrained behind a scattering of white strokes.
