Product description:This work began as a high resolution aerial photograph, then I added artistic effects to the image, retaining most of the detail of the subject building, providing a traditional Brandywine School look but from a unique aerial perspective. The original photograph was taken from about 200 feet facing northwest toward the Brandywine Valley. Rockford Tower overlooks Wilmington to the east and the Brandywine River and Montchanin to the north and west. When open, visitors can walk the 132 steps to the 360 degree open-air observatory 100 feet above the ground. Most of the 104 acres that comprise Rockford Park were originally owned by William P. Bancroft, a wealthy businessmen whose family owned the Bancroft Mills. In 1889, Bancroft donated 59 acres of land and personally convinced some members of the du Pont family to donate land as well to establish Rockford Park. Fellow Wilmingtonian Thomas F. Bayard assisted in retaining architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed Central Park in Manhattan, to design Rockford Park and other parts of Wilmington's city park system. Rockford Tower was built between 1899, finished in 1901 and opened as a functional water tower in 1903. Mr. Bancroft can be credited as having done more than any other Delawarean in preserving open space. In the late 1800s, he was concerned with the expansion of the city of Wilmington and Philadelphia and embarked on purchasing large amounts of land to be preserved. In 1901, Bancroft created the Woodlawn Trustees. Most of the lands Bancroft purchase are now state and federal parks, including Rockford Park and Brandywine Creek State Park. Rockford Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This is a Gicl้e fine art print, using archival inks on cold-press, acid-free 100% cotton rag watercolor paper, with an estimated 200 year archival life. Prints are 15.5” x 19.5” to fit mat opening of 16” x 20” and frame out to standard size frame holding a 20” x 24” mat. This is one of 250 limited-edition prints. Print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
